Dental implant failure rises over 40%: 4 highlights

Of the 2 million dental implants placed each year, over 40 percent may fail, requiring invasive surgery to remove, according to the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry.

Here are four highlights:

1. A growth in the dental implant and prosthetic market could reach $6.4 billion by 2018.

2. Dental malpractice attorneys indicated that eight years is the upper limit for the lifespan of a titanium implant.

3. Research suggests that 50 percent of all implants become infected, with 40 percent of implants experiencing peri-implantitis.

4. Patients with gum disease are at an even higher risk for implant failure.
