Majority of dentists between ages 55 & 64: 5 statistics

As of 2016, a majority of dentists, 24.4 percent, were between the ages of 55 and 64 years, according to the American Dental Association.

Here are five dentist statistics:

1. With the average retirement age among dentists jumping to 68 years, around 15 percent of dentists are over the age of 65.

2. There are roughly 196,441 dentists working in the U.S., of which 29.8 percent are female.

3. The ratio of dentists to population sits at 60.8 dentists per 100,000 U.S. population.

4. Among the population of dentists, 16.1 percent are under the age of 35; 22.9 percent are between the ages of 35 and 41; and 21.3 percent are between the ages of 45 and 54.

5. More than one in five dentists reported their practice, research or administration was an American Dental Association-recognized specialty.
