Iowa City-based University of Iowa began notifying students and a patient at its dental clinic March 19 that a dental student had self-identified as testing positive for COVID-19.
Students who had close contact with the infected student have been alerted. Additionally, a single patient who was treated by the student has been notified. The College of Dentistry student treated a patient with a headache but showed no other symptoms at the time.
The student was last on campus on March 12 and has been self-isolating ever since. Since learning of the incident, UI College of Dentistry notified the Johnson County Public Health department. The college also disinfected all operatories.
Moving forward, the university will not be able to report students and facility members who test positive for COVID-19.
