Dentist warns against TikToks claiming prosthetic teeth can be made with InstaMorph beads

Pradeep Adatrow, DDS, is warning against do-it-yourself dental hack videos that have recently gone viral on TikTok.

One of the videos suggests InstaMorph beads, which are beads that can be heated and formed into different shapes, can be used as an alternative to partial dentures. The TikTok has more than 1 million views.

While it may seem like an affordable alternative, the use of InstaMorph beads can lead to irreversible and costly harm in the future, including gum recession, tooth loss, infection and temporomandibular joint problems, according to an April 13 announcement from Dr. Adatrow.

Another viral dental hack on TikTok suggests 3 percent hydrogen peroxide is a safe teeth whitening method. However, 3 percent hydrogen peroxide is beyond the legally approved level of 0.1 percent and using it can lead to harmful effects such as permanent teeth sensitivity and gum irritation.

"These videos are created to gain views and earn money," Dr. Adatrow's statement said. "The video makers themselves might not be following the hacks shared. However, the individuals who watched the videos follow these practices without the information on the permanent damages these methods can cause to their dental health."

Dr. Adatrow, a periodontist and prosthodontist, leads Advanced Dental Implant and TMJ Center, a private practice based in Memphis, Tenn.
