Former Iowa dentist sentenced for overprescribing opioids, gun possession

Shawn Michael Kerby, a former Iowa dentist, was sentenced to 20 months in prison for obtaining opioids through patient prescriptions, according to the Des Moines Register.

Here's what you need to know:

1. Mr. Kerby acquired hydrocodone by misrepresentation. Additionally, he was found in procession of a firearm while under the influence of a controlled substance.

2. Investigators discovered Mr. Kerby would prescribe hydrocodone to patients who did not need the prescription. He would then instruct patients to return the opioids to him after the prescription was filled at a pharmacy.

3. Law enforcement officials conducted searches at Mr. Kerby's home and dental practices, Kerby Family Dentistry and Smiles Family Dental. They found him in procession of eight firearms.
