Orillia, Canada-based dentist Joe Phillips, DDS, filed a $10 million lawsuit against the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit to reject allegations he used improperly sterilized instruments, according to Bayshore Broadcasting.

Here are four insights.

1. Dr. Phillips filed the lawsuit after the health unit made allegations he was improperly sterilizing instruments.

2. Back in February, the health unit told patients at Dr. Phillips' practice to get tested for hepatitis B and hepatitis C as well as HIV if they had dental work performed there.

3. Dr. Phillips' practice remains open and he said the health unit's statement was false. He noted the Royal College of Dental Surgeons on Ontario investigated the allegations and did not find any evidence of sterilization issues.

4. No reports of patients' exposure to transmittable diseases due to Dr. Phillips have been uncovered.
