Rhode Island dentist pleads guilty to $1.2M in tax evasion: 5 details

North Providence, R.I.-based dentist Lawrence Stephenson, DDS, pled guilty to tax evasion, according to the Providence Journal.

Here are five details:

1. Dr. Stephenson admitted to failing to report $1.2 million in payments to his practice.

2. The dentist began diverting payments from his practice in 2011. Dr. Stephenson would deposit various checks from insurers and patients to his personal bank account.

3. Investigators became aware of the illicit actions when Dr. Stephenson withdrew $350,000 from his personal bank account in 2013 and 2014. The money was transferred to other banks and investment accounts under Dr. Stephenson's name.

4. In 2013, the dentist admitted to underreporting his earnings by more than $320,000.

5. Dr. Stephenson's sentencing is set for Oct. 12.
