Connecticut dentist disciplined for overtreating 3-year-old patient: 5 insights

The Connecticut State Dental Commission disciplined Ammar Idlibi, DMD, for allegedly performing unnecessary work on a 3-year-old pediatric patient, the Hartford Courant reports.

Here are five things to know:

1. Dr. Idlibi was fined $10,000, placed on probation for three years and required to take courses in ethics, record-keeping and consent, among other sanctions recommended by the Connecticut Department of Public Health.

2. CDPH has investigated Dr. Idlibi since 2016, when the patient's mother complained he installed eight steel crowns on the three-year-old's teeth in a single session.

3. Dr. Idlibi told the dental tribunal the patient's mother had given him authorization to treat whatever decay he found. The patient was put under general anesthesia, and Dr. Idlibi claimed he did not want to expose her to anesthesia more than once.

4. Dr. Idlibi asked the commission's decision be sealed while he appeals the ruling. The commission denied his request.

5. He plans to appeal the decision in state court.
