Mississippi auditor attacks dental examiners board for drinking on the job, mismanagement: 5 things to know

The Mississippi State Board of Dental Examiners is facing scrutiny after a state auditor's report brought attention to poor management practices and behavior among the board staff, according to Clarion Ledger.

Here are five things to know:

1. The auditor's report includes evidence showing board members were allowed to consume alcohol while on the job. Additionally, the state's dental examiner staff failed to follow purchasing procedures.

2. The report found the executive director ran the examiners board with completeautonomy and no oversight from fellow members. During board meetings, minutes were not properly approved, signed or posted in various instances.

3. The report also found the Mississippi State Board of Dental Examiners was not compliant with the state's travel card purchases and reimbursement law. Members were also receiving insurance coverage that differed from the indicated plans.

4. Back in July, Executive Director Diane Howell abruptly resigned after 24 years. It is unclear if the resignation occurred because of the state audit.

5. The Mississippi State Board of Dental Examiners continues to search for an executive director after their interim executive director abruptly resigned in September.
