Although Wisconsin has seen a 28 percent reduction in opioid prescriptions in the past three years, the state continues to crack down on physician prescribing patterns, according to La Crosse Tribune.

1. Currently, Wisconsin is investigating 16 dentists who were identified as "heavy" opioid prescribers.
2. The top opioid-prescribing dentist in the state writes roughly 230 opioid prescriptions a month, totaling approximately 4,500 doses.
3. There are another three top opioid prescribers who are being investigated. Additionally, the Wisconsin Dentistry Examining Board referred 12 dentists who wrote prescriptions lasting longer than three days but did not use the drug monitoring program.
4. The state estimates nearly 3,000 dentists prescribe opioids.
