In August, Krista Szewczyk was arrested for allegedly practicing dentistry without a license and writing illegal prescriptions, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Now, Ms. Szewczyk and her husband face two counts under the state's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act.
Here are five things to know:
1. Investigators claim John Szewczyk owned the illegal dental business, paying the bills and assisting Ms. Szewczyk, who investigators allege pulled teeth, applied fillings, replaced crowns and wrote prescriptions without a license.
2. Both are also accused of fraudulently billing insurance companies, identifying themselves as dentists performing procedures. Investigators also allege the two filed claims for procedures never performed.
3. Ms. Szewczyk was charged with 48 counts, including 40 counts of practicing dentistry without a license, three counts of writing unlawful prescriptions, one count of forgery and three counts of insurance fraud.
4. The illegal dentistry allegedly began as early as 2012. Investigators claim the Georgia Board of Dentistry became aware of Ms. Szewczyk in 2014.
5. Ms. Szewczyk has no record of a dental license or dental hygienist license, according to records.
