Delta Dental of California releases executive, board pay: 5 things to know

Nonprofit insurance giant Delta Dental of California is facing scrutiny after reports were released of the company's spending habits, according to The Daily Beast.

Five things to know:

1. In 2016, Delta Dental of California paid its former CEO Tony Barth $14.3 million. Mr. Barth left the company two years later. Delta Dental of California declined to disclose what it paid executives for 2017 and 2018.

2. Compared to Mr. Barth, in 2016 the nine highest-paid Delta Dental of California employees earned more than $1 million each year. In total, the 10 executives earned more than $30 million in 2016. That year the company generated $5.9 billion.

3. The insurer's executive pay is not the only thing facing criticism. Delta Dental of California is also facing claims it paid for board members' flights. Delta Dental of California's board of directors received between $46,000 and $203,000 in compensation for their work in 2016.

4. Delta Dental of California's board chairs received between $172,000 and $223,000 in 2016. While it is uncommon for board members for nonprofit organizations to earn compensation, it is not inappropriate, nor does it violate the company's bylaws.

5. Consumer advocates are now calling on state regulators to consider voiding Delta Dental of California's bid to acquire a 49.5 percent stake in Moda Health. Critics of the $155 million deal argue Delta Dental of California should allocate the money to expanding patients' access to care.
