Ohio dental practice alerts patients of data breach

The Dental Center of Northwest Ohio in Toledo is notifying patients of a Sept. 1, 2018, data breach.

The dental center's information technology vendor Arakyta alerted the Ohio practice of a security incident that may have affected patients. The IT vendor confirmed a ransomware attack had infected its systems, causing the breach of patient information at the Dental Center of Northwest Ohio.

Upon discovery, the Dental Center of Northwest Ohio began investigating the scope of the incident. Based on the information, the center confirmed patients' personal information may have been compromised due to the Arakyta ransomware attack.

Personal information stored on the system that may have been affected included names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, state identification numbers, driver's license numbers, medical treatments and histories, diagnosis and clinical treatment information, medical records and patient numbers, health insurance and benefits information, and fiscal account information.

The Dental Center of Northwest Ohio has not received reports of any personal information being misused as a result of the data breach.
