New Mexico to become 8th state to license dental therapists

New Mexico is poised to become the latest state to license dental therapists, according to local news station KRQE.

House Bill 308 was written to broaden access to dental care to people with low incomes and those who have no insurance, those with public insurance and people in rural and tribal areas.

Dental therapists are licensed care professionals who typically work with dental care teams supervised by a dentist. Licensing dental therapists makes it easier for them to give care without supervision, although they still must be supervised by dentists to perform complex procedures, such as extractions.

New Mexico would be the eighth state to pass dental therapist legislation.
