A former receptionist and bookkeeper for an Arlington Heights, Ill., dentist has been charged with stealing $625,526 over six years from the private practitioner, according to the Daily Herald.
The dentist noticed a problem in early 2016 due to “an increase in business without a corresponding increase in revenue,” the Herald reported. That’s when he brought in an investigator to review the books and removed Caren Irsuto from her position as receptionist and bookkeeper.
The internal investigation found “inconsistencies between accounts received and insurance reports,” Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Karen Crothers told the Herald. The thefts dated back to 2009, she said.
According to the internal review, Ms. Irsuto failed to deposit 1,464 checks. Instead, the receptionist allegedly deposited the checks into her personal accounts and cashed them at currency exchanges, a local bar and a gas station.
On a day the practice was closed, the dentist drove by and noticed Ms. Irsuto and her husband, Scott Irsuto, in the office parking lot , according to the newspaper. When the dentist called Ms. Irsuto to question why she was in the lot, she denied being there, the Herald reported, and she never returned.
Both Caren and Scott Irsuto were charged with financial fraud, and a Cook County judge set bail for them March 20 at $600,000 and $28,000, respectively. The judge mandated that each post their entire bail amounts in order to be released.
The dentist said the actions have had “a devastating impact" on his solo dental practice.
