A Springfield, Mo., dentist was sentenced to five years of probation for his alleged role in a $165,000 Medicaid fraud scheme, according to the Springfield News-Leader.
Federal prosecutors argued James Dye, DDS, helped dental clinic owner Pamela Van Drie defraud Medicaid. The two allegedly prescribed patients mouthpieces and then upcharged the price when billing Medicaid.
The Ortho-Tain mouthpiece sells for $50. Dr. Dye, however, allegedly billed the device to Medicaid as a "speech aid prothesis" for around $700. Dr. Dye and Ms. Van Drie are accused of falsely billing Medicaid between 2010 and 2015, filing 240 fraudulent claims, the Springfield News-Leader reports.
Dr. Dye appeared before a judge April 23, where he was sentenced to probation and ordered to pay $167,000 in restitution.
