Illinois dentists, physicians form coalition to fight proposed anesthesia rule

A group of dentists and physicians in Illinois are banning together to fight proposed legislation that would allow certified registered nurse anesthetists to administer anesthesia without a physician or dentist present, according to the Illinois Business Daily.

The proposed legislation aims to change the Nurse Practice Act. Certified registered nurse anesthetists would create an agreed-upon plan with either an anesthesiologist, surgeon, dentist or podiatrist, who would be "available" during procedures.

Current regulations require CRNAs to have a physician or dentist present when administering anesthesia.

A new coalition known as Preserve the Anesthesia Care Team is seeking to dismiss the proposal. The coalition is made up of:
• American College of Surgeons (Metro Chicago Chapter)
• American Society of Anesthesiologists
• Illinois Dermatological Society
• Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists
• Illinois State Dental Society
• Illinois Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons
• Illinois State Medical Society

The Illinois Association of Nurse Anesthetists is in support of the proposed legislation.

The bill has been sent back to the House Rules Committee. No vote has been taken on the proposed legislation.
