Several California dentists have reported getting calls from scammers posing as Drug Enforcement Administration agents, asking for money and making other demands, according to the California Dental Association.
Dentists say that the posing DEA agents provide badge numbers. The scammers have been telling the dentists they could be arrested if the demands are not met.
The DEA confirmed the calls are scams, with people using falsified phone numbers to mimic DEA numbers.
"DEA personnel will never contact practitioners or members of the public by telephone to demand money or any form of payment. DEA will not request any personal or sensitive information over the phone. Notification of a legitimate investigation or legal action is made via official letter or in person," the DEA said in a statement.
The California Dental Association recommends dentists train their staff to verify callers' credentials and information.
