North Branch, Minn.-based Bayview Dental has begun notifying 1,938 patients that their protected health information may have been exposed in a data breach, according to the HIPAA Journal.
On May 28, Bayview Dental noticed suspicious activity on its server. After contacting forensic experts, Bayview Dental learned July 4 that patients' health information may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party.
Patient information that may have been affected included names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, dental insurance information, medical/dental history information and a limited number of Social Security numbers.
Bayview Dental is unaware of any data misuse. Since the breach, the dental practice has adopted additional safeguards to prevent other cyberattacks. Employees have also undergone additional training on data privacy and security.
