Washington dentist illegally prescribed opioids to family member, police allege

A Spokane, Wash.-based dentist has been accused of prescribing opioids to his sister and taking them for himself, according to The Spokesman-Review.

Nicholas Harker, DDS, who practices at My Dentist in Spokane, was arrested in May for driving under the influence. When police pulled over the dentist, they found a bottle of hydrocodone acetaminophen in the car. The opioids were prescribed for Dr. Harker's sister.

Upon further investigation, officials say Dr. Harker had written the prescription for this sister the day before the arrest. Video shows Dr. Harker picking up the prescription for 28 pills at a local Walmart pharmacy.

When Dr. Harker was arrested for driving under the influence, the prescription bottle had 15 pills left.

Dr. Harker is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 4.
