Oral health nonprofits team up to educate dentists on cleft patients

Oral health nonprofits FDI World Dental Federation and Smile Train announced Sept. 6 a two-year partnership to improve oral health guidance for children with clefts.

The nonprofits have support from GSK Consumer Healthcare to develop educational resources for dentists.

Children with clefts have a higher risk of developing cavities and periodontal disease, along with other oral health issues. FDI and Smile Train will create oral health resources for dentists and cleft care teams. The two organizations will also develop informative and instructional materials for cleft patients and their families about the importance of oral health care.

Smile Train hopes to empower local cleft teams with training, funding and resources to provide free cleft surgery and care for children.

Susannah Shaefer, Smile Train president and CEO, said, "Regular dental care for children with clefts is essential to help manage their increased risk for oral diseases."
