North Carolina dentist to pay former practice $864K in embezzlement case

A Charlotte, N.C., dentist was ordered to pay his former practice $864,000 for embezzlement, according to The Charlotte Observer.

A jury found Steven Ghim, DDS, embezzled $171,314 from Dr. Ramesh Sunar & Associates, court documents show. Ramesh Sunar, DMD, is the owner of Charlotte Root Canal Center.

Additionally, Dr. Ghim was ordered to pay the practice $191,000 for what the jury said he took without authorization. Dr. Gim also has to pay the practice another $500,000 in punitive damages.

The criminal case against Dr. Ghim was dropped; however, it is unclear why. Dr. Ghim did not return messages from The Charlotte Observer for comment.
