ADA opens comment period for new standards on sterilization, dental lasers and more

The American Dental Association is accepting comments from dentists and other dental professionals on proposed revisions to existing standards.

Two of the major proposed revisions involve dental lasers and the sterilization of instruments. While dental lasers have been used by professionals for various years, the new standard will focus on providing recommended wavelengths that should be used on hard and soft tissue. Additionally, the new standard will provide further understanding of potential hazards and safety considerations when using dental lasers.

The other proposed revision focuses on the FDA’s guidance for reprocessing medical devices. In a new technical report, the ADA hopes to provide guidance on the development and validation of cleaning processes for dental instruments.

Additionally, the ADA is seeking comments on proposed revisions to endodontic instruments and the biocompatibility of medical devices.
