Texas dentist office to pay $20K to settle pregnancy discrimination suit

Dallas based-Smiley Dental Walnut agreed to pay $20,000 and provide other relief to settle allegations that the practice fired a receptionist for being pregnant, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

In May 2017, Smiley Dental Walnut hired a new receptionist who claimed to have informed a supervisor she was pregnant one month later. The supervisor then allegedly fired the new employee.

Such alleged conduct is in violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits workplace discrimination based on sex. After attempting to reach a pre-litigation settlement, the EEOC filed suit, seeking back pay and other damages, with an order prohibiting future discrimination and retaliation.

Smiley Dental Walnut will provide yearly training about pregnancy discrimination, according to the two-year consent decree entered Oct. 16. The decree requires the practice to distribute a notice about sex-based discrimination and implement procedures for reporting discrimination.
