A New Jersey oral surgeon and dentist had his licensed revoked Nov. 26 and was ordered to pay more than $517,000 for "gross negligence and professional misconduct," according to nj.com.
Attorney General Gurbir Grewal determined Andrew Maron, DDS, performed "hit and run dentistry" by unnecessarily extracting teeth, using faulty implants and discussing treatment options while patients were under the influence of anesthesia.
"Most dental practitioners are dedicated to the health and safety of their patients," Mr. Grewal said in a statement, according to nj.com. "But revolving-door dentistry that puts practitioners' financial gain ahead of patient health and safety erodes public trust and undermines the integrity of the entire population."
An investigation found Dr. Maron mistreated 17 patients between 2010 and 2015. In some instances, he would pull teeth and replace them with implants without examining if the natural tooth could be restored.
Dr. Maron also allegedly performed procedures knowing patients were unable to pay for them. He then pressured Medicaid patients to take loans to pay for different dental treatments.
The decision to revoke Dr. Maron's license upholds the January decision of an administrative law judge.
