A bookkeeper and receptionist for an Arlington Heights, Ill.-based dentist pleaded guilty Dec. 3 to stealing more than $600,000 from the practice over six years, according to the Daily Herald.
Caren Irsuto, 56, received a six-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to aggravated identity theft and theft. Her husband, Scott Irsuto, was sentenced to two years probation after pleading guilty to theft.
Joseph Favia, DDS, realized his bookkeeper was stealing from him in early 2016 after business increased but revenue did not, prosecutors said. Dr. Favia fired Ms. Irsuto and eventually discovered that the bookkeeper never deposited 1,464 checks totaling $625,526. Ms. Irsuto and her husband cashed the checks at currency exchanges, a gas station and a bar and deposited the money in a bank account, prosecutors said.
Dr. Favia told the Daily Herald he was happy the case was closed and was satisfied with the sentencing.
