A Fairfield, Conn.-based dentist must pay $1.7 million in damages after exploiting Medicaid patients at assisted living homes, according to the Connecticut Post.
From May 2014 to May 2015, Aram Agadjanian, DDS, submitted numerous claims for Medicaid patients' dental work that was considered unnecessary or was never provided, a Dec. 13 news release from the Connecticut Attorney General states. The dentist also created false records to substantiate the claims.
Dr. Agadjanian was ordered to pay a civil penalty of $1.5 million in addition to damages. The court imposed some of the maximum penalties because the dentist didn't provide essential services patients were entitled to, victimized handicapped individuals, was "persistent and egregious" in his behavior, and did not accept responsibility for his actions, the news release said.
Dr. Agadjanian was a dental provider in the Connecticut Medical Assistance Program from May 2009 to May 2015, when the Connecticut Department of Social Services terminated his provider agreement.
