Dentist workforce faces racial disparities, study shows

The dentist workforce does not reflect the racial makeup of the U.S., according to the most recent data from the American Dental Association.

The ADA released data in 2019 studying racial diversity in the dental workforce by comparing the racial makeup of the 2015 dentist workforce to the 2015 U.S. population.

Here are some of its key findings:

  • White people made up 61.7 percent of the U.S. population and 74.2 percent of its dentists.

  • Latinx people made up 17.7 percent of the U.S. population and 5.2 percent of its dentists.

  • Black people made up 12.4 percent of the U.S. population and 3.8 percent of its dentists.

  • Asian people made up 5.3 percent of the U.S. population and 15.7 percent of its dentists.
