William Giannobile, DDS, a key figure in periodontal research, became Boston-based Harvard School of Dental Medicine's dean Sept. 1.
Here are four things to know about the school's 11th dean:
- Before accepting his new role at Harvard, Dr. Giannobile was a professor of dentistry and biomedical engineering at the Ann Arbor-based University of Michigan for more than 22 years.
- Giannobile earned his DDS from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1991 and received his doctorate of medical science in oral biology from Harvard in 1996.
- "Starting on Sept. 1, my biggest priority is working with school leadership to continue to support our clinical and educational efforts so that we can optimize our ability to further research, teaching and clinical care in the face of the pandemic," Dr. Giannobile said in a Sept. 8 interview with The Harvard Gazette.
- Dr. Giannobile's additional plans for his deanship include promoting diversity and inclusion, spearheading new partnerships and initiatives and launching a climate survey to better understand the environment staff, faculty and students face. He also plans to inspire more research efforts focusing on regenerative medicine, computational medicine and the microbiome, and head and neck oncology.
