Virginia dentist gets prison, must pay $597K+ for tax fraud scheme

A Virginia dentist has received a nine-month prison sentence for failing to pay nearly $600,000 in taxes, according to NBC's WAVY-TV.

Robert Keith Barbour, DMD, was ordered to pay $597,002 in restitution, according to an Internal Revenue Service release cited by WAVY-TV. Dr. Barbour owned a dental practice from 1999 to 2017 and was in charge of its finances, according to court documents. From 2012 to 2015, Dr. Barbour filed accurate IRS Form 941 for payroll taxes, but failed to pay the taxes, instead keeping the withholdings from employee paychecks.

The IRS sent Dr. Barbour collection notices, notices of intent to levy and lien notices dating back to 2006, the agency said.

The dentist was indicted Nov. 6, 2019, and pleaded guilty Feb. 4, 2020.
