Kentucky dentist accused of prescribing opioids after license was suspended

A Louisville, Ky.-based dentist has been charged for allegedly prescribing hydrocodone and oxycodone after being suspended by the Kentucky Board of Dentistry, acting U.S. Attorney Michael Bennett said March 3.

Paul William Yaggie, DMD, 48, was served a Notice of Immediate, Temporary Suspension Sept. 21 from the state dental board, according to the criminal complaint. Following the notice, the dentist continued to see patients and write controlled substance prescriptions, claims the attorney general.

Dr. Yaggie allegedly prescribed more than 625 hydrocodone pills and 175 oxycodone pills while suspended. On Jan. 6, Dr. Yaggie was evicted from his dental office, where he abandoned his patient files, according to the attorney general. The dentist is accused of meeting a patient in a parking lot Feb. 15, prescribing hydrocodone and penicillin, and charging the patient $200 for the prescriptions and promised dental work. Dr. Yaggie didn't complete the dental work or return the money, and the pharmacy refused to fill the prescriptions, reports the attorney general.

If convicted, Dr. Yaggie faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release.
