Highest US dental patient volume seen since March 2020

Private dental practices are seeing patient volumes at an average of 86 percent, the highest since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, according to poll findings from the American Dental Association's Health Policy Institute.

As of April 12, the latest round of the HPI's weekly survey, which collected nearly 2,000 responses, shows 58.1 percent of dentists said their practice was open for business as usual, 41.5 percent said they were open but with lower patient volume than normal, and less than 1 percent said they were closed and not seeing patients.

About 96 percent of respondents said their practice was fully paying their staff that week. For comparison, just 27.3 percent said the same during the week of March 23, 2020.

HPI anticipates patient volumes will continue to increase over the next few months.
