Former ADA VP dies; pediatric dental practice closes temporarily

Jonathan Shenkin, DDS, a former vice president of the American Dental Association and past president of the Maine Dental Association, died Aug. 23.

Dr. Shenkin was the owner of Augusta (Maine) Pediatric Dentistry and a clinical associate professor at the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, according to an Aug. 24 news release from the ADA.

In an Aug. 27 Facebook post, Augusta Pediatric Dentistry said Dr. Shenkin died unexpectedly and updates would come later about plans to reopen his practice.

Dr. Shenkin served as president of the Maine Dental Association from 2009 to 2010. In addition to serving as the ADA's vice president from 2013 to 2015, he also previously served as the group's communications council chair and spokesperson for pediatric dental issues.

He earned his dental degree from the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in New York City and a master of public health degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
