Allen Sclaroff, DDS, a professor of clinical otolaryngology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, died Aug. 18 of complications from multiple myeloma. He was 75.
Dr. Sclaroff received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, physiology and economics from the University of Colorado Boulder. He then earned his dental degree from the Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry in Philadelphia. He also completed an oral and maxillofacial surgery internship and two residencies at the Washington University School of Dental Medicine.
He became a faculty member of Washington University's dental school in 1978 and was named chair of the oral and maxillofacial surgery department in 1986. Washington University named him surgeon-in-chief of the oral and maxillofacial surgery division in the department of surgery at its medical school. He also led the surgery departments at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis and the St. Louis Children’s Hospital. He continued to serve as a professor and director of the oral and maxillofacial surgery division in the department of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery after the university's dental school closed in 1991. He retired in June 2020.
Dr. Sclaroff was a member of several professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, the Missouri Dental Association and the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons.
