Kool Smiles chief dental officer forced to resign from Georgia Board of Dentistry: 4 takeaways

Amid pressure from Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, R, Marietta, Ga.-based Kool Smiles Chief Dental Officer Dale Mayfield resigned from his position on the Georgia Board of Dentistry, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Here are four takeaways:

1. Mr. Mayfield’s resignation follows accusations Kool Smiles performed unnecessary dental procedures on children as part of a Medicaid fraud scheme.

2. Kool Smiles recently settled the case with the DoJ for $23.9 million after federal investigators accused the dental service organization of filing thousands of false Medicaid claims.

3. A 2013 federal complaint, alleged Kool Smiles preyed on low-income children and families.

4. In a written statement Mr. Mayfield said, “Given the distractions that might be caused by new of the voluntary settlement between Kool Smiles and the government regarding services rendered more than seven years ago, I felt it was in the best interest of the board for me to step down,” the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
