The average dental premium differs widely among states, according to a report by HealthPocket, a new technology company that compares and ranks all the health insurance plans available.

According to the report, 82 percent of dental plans studied charged a co-insurance fee for major dental expenses such as crowns or root canals. The average co-insurance fee for major dental services was 63 percent.

The report also found that:

•    The state with the lowest average dental premium was West Virginia at $23.70
•    Alaska had the highest average dental premium at $63.61.
•    Wisconsin was the state with next highest average premium — $41.11.
•    Insurers with highest average monthly premiums for adult dental insurance plans were Delta Dental of Arizona ($44.73) and Delta Dental Plan of South Dakota ($42.70)
•    Insurers with the lowest average monthly premiums were Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan ($14.82) and Humana Health Benefit Plan of Louisiana ($16).
