California legislators passed a law in 2016 requiring more thorough reporting of patient deaths following the death of a young patient from dental anesthesia use. Now after the state reviewed its pediatric anesthesia practices, legislators are recommending an amendment to the law, The Sacramento Bee reports.

1. A state Senate committee reviewed anesthesia use while comparing it to other states and now recommends a second staff member trained in monitoring and resuscitating pediatric patients participate in any dental procedure requiring anesthesia.
2. Dental, anesthesiology and pediatric association representatives attended the committee session.
3. Originally, the bill wanted to require a second employee in the room when a patient recieved anesthesia, but dental lobbying groups reduced the scope to the reporting mandate.
