Chinese robotics system performs autonomous dental implant surgery: 5 insights

In China, a robot performed dental implant surgery without the assistance of a dental surgeon, according to ZDNet.

Here are five insights:

1. The robot was developed through collaboration between Beijing-based Beihang University and the Fourth Military Medical University's Stomatological Hospital.

2. Medical staff placed orientation mechanisms in the patient's mouth prior to the procedure and entered pre-programmed instructions into the robot, before stepping away for the robot to perform the surgery.

3. Because the patient was awake and alert during the procedure, the robot needed to respond to unexpected movements and recalibrate as it implanted two 3-D printed teeth.

4. Medical staff and oral surgeons were on hand in case something went wrong during the hour-long surgery.

5. Robots are quickly entering the dentistry field. In the U.S., oral surgeons are beginning to adopt robot assistants for dental implant surgery.
