US dental practice revenue dropped 6% in 2020: Dental Intelligence

Compared to 2019, dental practice revenue declined 6 percent in 2020, according to Dental Intelligence data from 3,677 U.S. dental practices.

Dental Intelligence, a U.S. dental practice analytics provider, analyzed data ranging from Jan. 1, 2019 to Dec. 31, 2020, from 3,677 dental practices it serves. The practices surveyed are located in all 50 states. Broken down by regional demographic, 41 percent of the practices included are in the South, 29 percent in the West, 11 percent in the Northeast and 19 percent in the Midwest.

Four key report takeaways:

1. If extrapolating the Dental Intelligence revenue data to represent the full industry, it would mean dental practices brought in $8.3 billion less in 2020 than 2019.

2. Average production for dental practices was down 3.1 percent in 2020 compared to 2019.

3. Dental practices saw an average 10 percent decrease in completed hygiene appointments in 2020 compared to 2019. The average practice had 385 monthly hygiene appointments in 2020, compared to 428 in 2019. Dental hygiene appointments dropped by 47 percent year-over-year in spring 2020, before recovering in the summer and dipping again in the fall.

4. Average annual patient value declined by 5 percent in 2020, from $677 to $644.
