New Jersey-based dental startup Grin has shipped out about 5,000 units of its teledentistry system since the pandemic began, according to Bloomberg.
Founded in 2019, Grin offers a teledentistry service that allows dentists to receive a video of the inside of patients' mouths. Once dental providers receive the video, Grin's software helps them analyze the teeth's condition and connects the footage to existing patient management systems.
As the COVID-19 pandemic drastically reduced the number of patients dentists could see in person, Grin CEO Adam Schulhof, DMD, told Bloomberg the company expedited its system's development and teamed up with 3M to distribute it to dental providers as quickly as possible. Dr. Schulhof, who uses Grin's system for his own practice, told Bloomberg about 1,000 patients have used the system so far.
Dr. Schulhof told Bloomberg he expects Grin to integrate artificial intelligence image analysis into its system to become a better diagnostic tool for dentists. He also said the company is fighting the challenge posed to conventional dentistry by other teledentistry startups that focus more on direct-to-consumer offerings.
"We're trying to disrupt the disrupters," Dr. Schulhof told Bloomberg.
