Federal and state health officials have been investigating a tuberculosis outbreak connected to recalled human bone tissue products sold to hospitals, surgical centers and dental clinics.
The tuberculosis cases are linked to Aziyo Biologics' viable bone matrix products, which were recalled in July after two patients treated with a viable bone matrix product made from one donor lot contracted tuberculosis. The lot was sent to hospitals, surgical centers and dental clinics across California, Louisiana, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Texas and Virginia.
Here are two updates to know:
- A second death in the outbreak was confirmed Aug. 11.
- A group of lawmakers wrote a letter to the U.S. FDA commissioner pushing for stricter guidance for bone grafts. The lawmakers recommended that the FDA consider guidelines from the American Association of Tissue Banks' bulletin.
