Dr. Othman Shibly provides dental care to Syrian refugees in Lebanon: 5 things to know

Othman Shibly, DDS, recently visited Syrian refugee camps in Lebanon for his 12th humanitarian aid trip, according to the UB Reporter.

Here are five things to know about Dr. Shibly, a clinical associate professor at University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine:

1. He visits countries neighboring Syria to establish dental clinics, open schools and deliver medical supplies, in an effort to provide oral healthcare to student refugees.

2. On his most recent trip, he provided dental care to more than 1,000 children over the course of five days — performing temporary fillings, sealants and fluoride varnishes.

3. He has received substantial support for his humanitarian efforts, including a $20,000 worth of dental materials from Henry Schein.

4. He was recently awarded the Ibn Al-Nafees Outstanding Achievement Award from the Syrian American Medical Society for his work.

5. On future visits, he hopes to offer maxillofacial surgery through a partnership with Doctors Without Borders and local universities.
