6 states that have increased dental reimbursements in the last 3 years

Here are six states that have increased reimbursement rates for dental services since 2021:

2024

The Nebraska legislature approved a bill that increases reimbursements for Medicaid dental services by 12.5% for fiscal year 2024-25.

2023

Michigan invested $85.1 million in reimbursement increases for dental providers, allowing providers to be paid at 100 percent of the Average Commercial Rate. The state also specifically raised the reimbursement rates for dental procedures performed in outpatient hospitals and ASCs.

2022

Virginia passed a state budget that included a 30 percent increase in Medicaid reimbursements for dental procedures. The budget allocated more than $116 million in new state and federal funding to fill the gap in reimbursements.

The South Dakota Legislature approved a bill to increase Medicaid reimbursements for dentists. Previous reimbursement rates were 62 percent of what private insurance would pay, but the South Dakota Department of Social Services was tasked with determining new reimbursement amounts based on current normal and customer dental fees in the state.

The Minnesota Department of Human Services implemented a base dental reimbursement rate increase as part of a $61 million dental package to make oral healthcare more accessible. The previous model made reimbursements dependent on factors such as provider's location and patient's age. Under the new model, all dentists receive the same rates for the same services.

2021

Illinois increased reimbursement rates for restorative services, dentures, extractions and anesthesia services.
