10 worst states for jobs in 2023

West Virginia was ranked the worst state for jobs, according to a Nov. 29 report by personal finance website WalletHub.

To create the rankings, WalletHub used 34 key indicators of job market strength and economic environment. Metrics in the job market category included job opportunities and employment growth, and data sets in the economic environment category included median annual income and monthly average starting salary. 

Here are the 10 worst states for jobs and their score out of 100 points, starting with the lowest ranked:

50. West Virginia: 33.61

49. Kentucky: 34.16

48. Mississippi: 36.33

47. Louisiana: 43.87

46. Pennsylvania: 44.04

45. Indiana: 44.23

44. Oregon: 44.38

43. Arkansas: 45.89

42. Alabama: 46.62

41. Idaho: 46.74
