Olde Towne Medical and Dental Center in Williamsburg, Va., recently suffered a ransomware incident affecting 2,567 individuals.

The clinic discovered that its computer system was being targeted by INC ransomware after receiving a ransom note May 15. INC ransomware has targeted several healthcare organizations in recent years.

The clinic said it immediately shut down its network systems and terminated all external access to patient information. It also worked with cybersecurity experts to restore access to patient data and ensure its servers were secure, according to a July 11 notice.

Olde Towne Medical and Dental Center said that although electronic medical

records were encrypted and not readily accessible to the ransomware group, separate imaging and consultant reports may not have been as protected. The clinic said its cybersecurity experts are monitoring the dark web and other locations to ensure patient data is not misused.

The clinic has notified the FBI and Virginia Attorney General’s Office of the incident. The event was also submitted to the HHS Department’s Office for Civil Rights Breach Portal July 13.
