A new report from the Carequest Institute for Oral Health shows that the majority of Americans support water fluoridation.
CareQuest partnered with Marketing for Change Co. to conduct a survey of 1,114 U.S. adults between July 7-9.
The survey comes as water fluoridation is under intense scrutiny at the state and federal levels due to concerns of its link to health complications. Some states have banned the practice, while HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently said he plans to advise the CDC to stop recommending adding fluoride to public water supplies.
Four findings from the survey:
1. More than 80% of respondents said they either support community water fluoridation or are not opposed to it.
2. Six percent of respondents think all communities should ban water fluoridation.
3. Seventy-nine percent of respondents said they believe the government should do what it can to protect and improve oral health.
4. Ninety-six percent of respondents said they trust their family doctor or pediatrician as a source to learn about fluoride in drinking water.
