The National Council of Insurance Legislators has approved amendments to change virtual credit card-related payments to dentists from an “opt-out” to “opt-in” system, according to a Dec. 3 news release from the American Dental Association.

Here are five things to know:

  1. With the changes, dental plans must  receive permission from dentists before issuing any payment method that has associated fees, including virtual credit cards.
  2. Dentists must actively change their preferred payment method to swap to another option.
  3. Under the opt-out approach, dentists would have to go through a lengthy process each time they renewed their provider agreement with an insurer.
  4. Adopting the opt-in system provides dentists with greater transparency and allows providers to avoid unwanted fees, according to the ADA.
  5. The amendments were made to the 2020 Transparency in Dental Benefits Contracting Model Act.
