Mississippi public service commissioner suggest fluoride review: 5 things to know

De’Keither Stamps, Mississippi public service commissioner, has introduced a resolution to review local public water systems’ continued use of synthetic sodium fluoride additives in drinking water, according to a Jan. 16 report from CBS affiliate 12 News

Here are five things to know:

  1. Mr. Stamps also urged Mississippi to prohibit the addition of synthetic sodium fluoride to public drinking water systems. 
  2. The resolution proposes that, when appropriate, water systems remove these additives from water supplies.
  3. Its stated intent is to improve public transparency and address cost pressures on utility systems related to water treatment.
  4. Mississippi’s water systems are facing rising operational costs and aging infrastructure, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
  5. The resolution seeks to ensure that any changes in drinking water policies are clearly communicated to the public.
