The 10 states with the best, worst dental health in 2026

Illinois was ranked as the state with the best dental health in 2026 by personal finance website Wallethub, earning a score of 75.21 out of 100.

The top spot in the rankings is occupied by Illinois for the third year in a row. Mississippi received a total score of 32.93, ranking as the state with the worst dental health in 2026. 

The study gave all 50 states and Washington, D.C., a score based on 25 metrics, including the share of individuals who visited a dentist in the past year, dental treatment costs and adults who experience pain due to their oral health condition. 

There were two main categories for the metrics: dental habits and care and oral health. Each category was worth up to 50 points. 

The rankings were published by Wallethub Jan. 29. 

Here are the 10 states with the best and worst dental health in 2026, along with their scores out of 100:

Top 10:

  1. Illinois: 75.21
  2. Minnesota: 74.09
  3. Wisconsin: 73.88
  4. Connecticut: 73.01
  5. Idaho: 72.61
  6. Michigan: 71.61
  7. North Dakota: 68.12
  8. Massachusetts: 67.95
  9. Washington, D.C.: 65.64
  10. Ohio: 65.56

Bottom 10:

  1. Mississippi: 32.93
