Arizona Sen. Janae Shamp, RN, has introduced a bill that would ban public water fluoridation in the state, The Center Square reported Feb. 3.
The Senate Committee on Government advanced Senate Bill 1019 Feb. 3, moving it forward to the full Senate for consideration.
Sen. Shamp argued that the state should “stay current with evidence-based practices,” adding that current practices are “ineffective” at reducing tooth decay for the public. She said her measure prioritizes statewide health and individual choice over government overreach.
Sen. Shamp said she expects opposition to the bill from local government and public health agencies, as well as a veto from Gov. Katie Hobbs should the full legislature pass it.
Florida and Utah became the first two states to ban public water fluoridation statewide last year.
